I love the Vorkosigan saga, myself. Also Discworld, and Sandman’s writing was usually good, though some of the art (especially later) was dreadful.
Patricia Cornwell doesn’t impress me; I read two (maybe part of a third), decided that she was writing the same book multiple times, and dropped her.
Janet Evanovich is wildly popular, but honestly, I got the point after the first Plum novel; the gal has no sense at all, or apparently any ability to learn, and I’d rather read about women with brains.

I also recommend O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series.
