1. I wasn’t going to comment on this one (I have somewhat strong opinions on the quality of exam-setting in that period); but I’ve just remembered that Ken Riley was my first contact with Clare, at a careers fair in a (rival) comprehensive school hall in Durham in 1982-3, and he couldn’t have been nicer or more encouraging about Oxbridge applications (he was, oddly, representing both universities), and later got in touch about a Target Schools MML day at Clare.

   Having said that, I think that was just about my last contact with him, too, being a wussy arts student…
