I’m sure I’ve mentioned before seeing a symposium in about 1987 where Haigh argued that the Protestant settlement was a failure and how the protestants (the puritans?) were actually felt to be more of a threat than the catholics (with no move in doctrine after the 39 articles, and if I recall correctly some significance in which of the several editions of the Book of Common Prayer were adopted), whereas ?Conrad Russell? argued it was the complete opposite and the settlement was a success because it lasted.
