4) Roger Zelazny and Andre Norton: Proponents of Individualism, by Carl Yoke
I got this by mistake from Alibris, because I thought it was the full-length book on Zelazny by his boyhood friend Carl Yoke, also published in 1979. In fact it’s a slim pamphlet – only 26 pages – published by the Ohio library system to publicise two of their state’s best known sf authors (though as Yoke points out others from there include Harlan Ellison and Stephen Donaldson). I have a couple of other books on Zelazny by Theodore Krulik and Jane Lindskold, but actually I think this is pretty good value, with insightful analysis of Zelazny’s use of the hero theme in his works. (I skipped the bits about Norton, apart from the only book mentioned that I remembered having read, The Beast Master.) Will try even harder now to get the book I thought I was getting this time…
