The Fifth Season, by N.K. Jemisin

Now on the Nebula shortlist (where it’s second among Goodreads, third on LibraryThing) this is one of the most buzzed novels of last year. I very much enjoyed the world-building, both the existence of a minority with powers of manipulating rock and other elements, and the politics of how that works out in practice. I was less excited by the plot and characters, and lost track once or twice. If it gets onto the Hugo ballot I shall give it another try.

  1. The first episode I saw from 1965 will be whichever got released on VSH first! I’m rather fond of the first episode of ‘The Romans’, especially the way it starts after the TARDIS crew have been there for a while. And they so seem like they are enjoying each others’ company.

I loved ‘Doctor Who and the Zarbi’ and was thus rather disappointed when I finally saw ‘The Web Planet’. The book definitely clears up some of the plot holes and the …odd… visuals.
