1. I’ve recently written about a couple of these:

   • The War of the Ring and The End of the Third Age (though the edition I read was titled Sauron Defeated) give fascinating insights into Tolkien’s literary techniques: I discussed the thoroughness of his foreshadowing and his obsession with consistency.
   • Surface Detail has some great passages of Banksian invention, but the plot is witless and the fanservice is shameless.

   Other recommendations: Desolation Island (the best of Patrick O’Brian’s series); Thorns (from Silverberg’s golden period); The Tenant of Wildfell HallMiracle Visitors so maybe you don’t appreciate his brand of inspired lunacy).

   Also, although I have not read it, Cycling in Victorian Ireland sounds intriguing, so you should read it and then tell us all about it.
