Other recommendations: Desolation Island (the best of Patrick O’Brian’s series); Thorns (from Silverberg’s golden period); The Tenant of Wildfell HallMiracle Visitors so maybe you don’t appreciate his brand of inspired lunacy).
Also, although I have not read it, Cycling in Victorian Ireland sounds intriguing, so you should read it and then tell us all about it.
