I’m not sure how you’d do it tactfully, but if I were A (or B once I’d gotten over my grumpiness) I’d be grateful for the tip. I only found out that one of my referees (one I had to use) had moved on to a different institution when a friend told me. I don’t know how many times he hadn’t answered requests for references.
