Having read both books, I think you’re pretty much on target. The Island at the Center of the World is a book that reframes how we think about an enormous chunk of American history. Amsterdam is a very entertaining overview of a well-trodden subject.
I do actually think that a hundred years from now, the Amsterdam of today will be remembered far more for having pioneered the turn away from car-centered urban infrastructure than it will be for its liberal attitude toward weed. This is barely noted in Shorto’s book, which I found striking.
