Wench, by Erynne Rivers

Second paragraph of third chapter:

Marian does not know how long she has lain there.

A fun re-telling of the Robin Hood legend as a conflict between ancient powers and twelfth-century modernity and patriarchy, with some good spicy moments in the relationship between Robin and Marian. A first novel by an American author who doesn’t always get the cultural nuances right – Marian’s father’s name is Eamon (I blame Robert Jordan) and the evil Sheriff’s name is, I kid you not, Baldric (I blame Blackadder). But it’s engaging and passionate. You can get Wench here.
