Back from Strasbourg

Lots of interesting meetings today at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, including an unexpected encounter at lunchtime with a Serbian journalist friend. “, you must come down to the press room when your meetings are over!” he cried in delight. “A lot of us would love to hear your views on Serbia – you are so well known!” Hmm, I thought, we’ll see what I feel like at the end of the day.

After our last meeting I found myself in a lift with a tall parliamentarian wearing a large campaign badge with the name ШЕШЕЉ and a picture of one of the most evil men in Europe. I realised that my own name was visible on my visitor’s badge, and casually took hold of my own lapel in order to cover it. If I’m really that well known in Serbia, that’s one political party I don’t want to be stuck in the lift with.

I didn’t bother with the press room. Five hours’ drive back from Strasbourg, but I made it safely and am now going to bed.

  1. I’m on 106. What always surprises me about going through that list is how many countries I’ve been to without having been to any of the UNESCO sites.

Should get another two on the list this month, though.
