  1. It isn’t even honest really to say that the Dutch were defeated in the East indies. The British attempted to occupy the former Dutch territories in 1945 with the intent of handing them over to the Dutch but never succeeded in really gaining control despite on occasions rearming the Japanese to fight against the Nationalists.

    I am seriously frustrated about the lack of good survey works of the history of the British Isles that fully consider the individual histories of the constituent parts and the relations between them. The recent Penguin History of Britain is good for some periods but excludes Scotland for virtually all of the period c.1250 to William of Orange’s successful invasion. It’s somewhat better on Ireland probably because that was subject to the English crown (at least in theory).
