The Economist rather misses the boat: one of the key points that comes up when you compare Bond with Who is the regeneration issue. For viewers who have got used to regeneration being an integral part of the overall story arc in Who, Bond is inherently confusing. When Craig did Casino Royale, where were we supposed to be in Bond’s life? We have to scratch our heads and work it out from clues as the film develops, and force ourselves to forget what we have seen before in other Bond films. Does the character storyline get “reset” when a new Bond-actor comes on? Does each new actor get a new set of M/Q/Moneypenny/Felix actors?
