Maternity leave

There are five countries in the world (out of 173 surveyed, though there are 192 UN member states so some must have fallen through the cracks) which do not provide, or require employers to provide, any form of paid maternity leave.

Four of them are Lesotho, Liberia, Swaziland, and Papua New Guinea.

Can you guess what the fifth is?

The United States of America.

(Hat-tip to Steven Hill on the always excellent .)

  1. I think the FYROM should call themselves Illyria. It’s a charming name, it’s a historical name for that region, and it would get the Greeks to get over themselves and let the FYROM actually do stuff. Furthermore, it would be nice for Twelfth Night.
