I’m surprised – I found it very predictable in terms of plot, scenario and characterisation and pedestrian in terms of prose. Which I’m guessing is why it didn’t find a mainstream publisher, as the editors who saw it presumably felt the same.
But then, I’ve been reading an awful lot of books for a great many years. I can see how and why it found an audience online – for younger readers especially who wouldn’t be familiar with the precursors and influences I was seeing. It’s not an objectively *bad* book so it doubtless worked well enough for them to enthuse about it to their friends. Good for them and for Howey.
But as a route to fame and fortune for a would be author to try and replicate? If that really were possible, we’d all be doing it!
