Though, for me, the ending of Revelation Space didn’t live up to the journey to get there, the journey was excellent. His world-building, and ambiguously moraled character depiction, are superb – don’t think he’s quite up with Banks (you say calmer, I’d say less exuberant; not much difference) but for me far more enjoyable than, say, Baxter.
