  1. True, though I am very much into science fiction, and little into fantasy so I know little about Flann’s work. Still, I think it strange that in the 60s and 70s there were two excellent science fiction authors from Northern Ireland, and none from the Republic. Demographics would suggest the Republic should have had at least four comparable science fiction writers. Were they crowded out by the tax immigrants? Was the greater industrialisation in the North responsible for a more futuristic outlook? Or perhaps being part of a larger country with a bigger fanbase helped?

Regarding the immigrants, it is interesting that Herbert seemed to have both gained a loathing for Irish society, and misunderstood it greatly (judging from “The White Plague”) – whilst Harrison became greatly enamoured of Irish society, and still misunderstood it greatly (Judging from the Irish parts of “Stars and Stripes Triumphant!!!”)
