1. The GR/LT ratio is indeed a statistic which I should take more seriously. The Dog Stars has a GR/LT ratio of almost 14, which is more than all but two of the books on last year’s Clarke long list. None of the others is over 6; 2312 has 5.7, Angelmaker 5.5, Nod 3.3 (from a very small sample) and Intrusion a fannishly healthy 1.7.

   Last year’s winner also had the a GR/LT ratio of 1.7, the lowest of the nominees:
