The only potential UUP leader in recent history who I think could have garnered some Catholic support was Ken Maginnis, though David Trimble grew on me personally after he shifted away from the triumphalism expressed in his jig with Paisley at the end of the Drumcree March in 95 and put his full efforts into the Peace Process.

    Of course, there’s also the problem that Catholic candidate would face a far larger threat, both to themselves and their families, from some in the Nationalist and Republican communities.
