Unwelcome ally?

I noticed from random googling that Senator Edward Kennedy said nice things about my employers in a speech last week. So I expected to hear a jubilant reaction from one of my liberal American colleagues when I told him about it just now. But no, he was deeply depressed by the news. “To be honest, in terms of getting the current administration to listen to what we’re saying, an endorsement from Fidel Castro might have been more useful,” he grumbled. Take it where you can get it, is what I say.

Me too. Particularly now that I’ve met the two candidates face-to-face, I’m intrigued to discover what kind of a slow-motion car crash will occur after Wednesday night’s result. (No matter which candidate wins, it’ll have a major impact on the image and internal stability of the UUP.)

I’m popping along on Wednesday – though nosey bloggers and journalists have no access to the hall, the vote etc. Much like the husting events which were kept to UUP members only – word was that Tom Elliott wouldn’t agree to press involvement, and he also wouldn’t agree to a joint interview with Basil McCrea on last week’s Hearts and Minds. There’ll be a pool camera and photographer for the vote.

I’m reckoning that we’ll be able to predict the result by counting the buses parked outside the Waterfront!
