This Sporting Life, and Peace in Our Time, by Una McCormack

Two Big Finish Short Trips, both by Una McCormack in advance of her Novacon appearance, both featuring the First Doctor and Steven (the first also with Dodo), both moored in real historical events, both read by Peter Purves. Both are audios, so I won’t attempt to locate the second paragraph of the third section in either case.

This Sporting Life, from 2016, is about the theft of the World Cup thirty years before. Stephen finds himself unexpectedly holding part of the trophy, and the TARDIS crew ends up entangled in a trail of stranded aliens and helpful humans, and the need to get history back onto the right course. The alien intrusion into our history is of course one of the classic Doctor Who plots, but nicely done here, and there are some good character moments for the unsporty Stephen, vs Dodo for whom this is contemporary history. The title of course refers to the 1963 film of the same name starring William Hartnell. You can get This Sporting Life here.

Peace in Our Time, from 2019, is also a story of alien intrusion, but this time it is evil extraterrestrials meddling with the Anglo-German naval arms race by infiltrating the Admiralty just before the launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906, with the Doctor and Steven trying again to re-route history onto the correct lines. The interesting thing here is that the viewpoint character is Ruby Watkins, a servant in a posh house, who is a channel for McCormack’s observations about class and patriarchy, and ends up (minor spoiler) engaging with the suffragettes. It stretches a bit farther than This Sporting Life, which is not necessarily a bad thing. You can get Peace in Our Time here.
