Guardian books: Crime

Thanks to I have a full list of the 147 books the Guardian lists in the Crime section of its 1000 must-read novels. As before, I’ve bolded those that I’ve read; none unfinished and only one that I didn’t like. Today’s score is 33 out of 147, compared with yesterday’s 25 out of 145. I confess I’m not tiotally sure I’ve read those particular Cornwell and Hiaasen novels, but I know I’ve read most of them especially the early ones.

  1. I certainly don’t dispute that Gaunt was given Moonbase 3 as compensation for not getting Doctor Who. That seems entirely plausible. But I don’t necessarily think that the absence of a paper trail shows that this was all the compensation she received, and she wasn’t paid off for Who. One relevant point is that the Who role was for twenty-six 25-minute episodes, whilst Moonbase 3 was only six 50-minute episodes – even assuming that the latter attracted higher rates of pay, paying her for the one might not compensate financially for losing the other. I’m inclined to think that she was paid off on her Who contract and offered Moonbase 3, to compensate for the less easily financially quantifiable losses – not getting television exposure in one of the BBC’s top programmes, and not having the opportunity to carry on the role for another year or two if she’d wanted.
