Second paragraph of third story (“Miss Marple Takes Manharttan”, by Alyssa Cole):
Despite being warned against such a circumstance by her nephew, Raymond West, and his wife, Joan, who had flown her out to the United States with them, she was standing alone.
Twelve new Miss Marple stories by writers of varying degrees of fame, including Naomi Alderman and Val McDermid. Some of them take Miss Marple out of her comfort zone, not always successfully; I really enjoyed Naomi Alderman’s Dorothy L. Sayers pastiche, which I read conveniently just before my own college reunion a couple of weeks ago; Jean Kwok’s locked door mystery set on a liner en route to Hong Kong was also memorable, as was Ruth Ware’s Christmas mystery. I didn’t hate any of them, and it’s a nice homage to the Queen of Crime and her most memorable woman character. You can get Marple here.
