  1. I am unsure why you feel the need to be tactful as opposed to simply factual.

    A good candidate lets referees know what they are going for, to expect a request, and check that this will be ok with them. Absence of this makes me hope it is not fact checking job or one involving stakeholder management.

    “Your referees have not replied and I will be making a decision on the role in 24 hours.”
