  1. I think you mean *Penric’s* Demon by Lois McMaster Bujold? I bring it up to make the lives of the people who have to clean up the nomination data just that tiny bit easier. I agree that it’s excellent and it’s on my personal list also.

    I don’t know if you are looking for suggestions, but some of my favorites from this year so far are:
    “Cat Pictures Please” by Naomi Kritzer is cute and funny
    “Midnight Hour” by Mary Robinette Kowal is a re-imagining of some fairytale tropes that is very sad and perhaps shading into horror.
    “Pocosin” by Ursula Vernon is steeped in folklore, quirky and funny-and-poignant in that Ursula Vernon way.
    In Libres by Elizabeth Bear was one that I, as a former writer of a dissertation, really enjoyed.
    And Damage, by David Levine was to my mind an example of the kind of fiction Puppies say they like, except done right.
