Whoniversaries 12 July

i) births and deaths

12 July 1933: birth of Brian Cant, who I knew as one of the great BBC children’s presenters of the 1970s but before then had appeared in The Daleks’ Master Plan (1965) as Kert Gantry and The Dominators (1968) as Tensa.

12 July 1980: birth of Tom Price (PC Andy in Torchwood).

12 July 1995: death of Gordon Flemyng, director of Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) and Daleks’ Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. (1966)

ii) broadcast anniversaries

None.

iii) date almost specified in story

12 July 1966: It is roughly about this date that WOTAN starts getting active in The War Machines (1966) – four days before “C-Day”. But more of that on Friday..

  1. Shakespeare isn’t good for accuracy. Richard’s Queen (and second wife) was a child at the time (and did love him, but not in that way, too young even by the standards of then), so their leavetakings in the play far too adult. Recently saw Edward II at the Royal Exchange. Can see the point about plot, but the voice was so different, can not see how anybody can suggest Marlowe wrote any of Shakespeare’s plays for him!

The iconography of Richard II seeing himself as Christ though is there front and centre in all of the surviving paintings of him. He did actively encourage people to portray him this way. No King who was King that young turned out well, they all turned out odd.
