Wasn’t the gracelessness something of an accident – UNIT were going to have a big last hurrah in The Hand of Fear, when it was a six-parter and the final story of the season, but the original Baker-Martin script was unproduceable and replaced by The Seeds of Doom at a very late stage; Courtney, released from The Hand of Fear, then got another job and wasn’t available to appear in the military sequence at the end, hence the appearance and disappearance of Major Beresford. So I recall, anyway.
