You can tell that University Challenge was recorded some time ago…

…when one of the questions is, “In Operation Restore Democracy, in October 1994, with the unanimous approval of the UN Security Council, the United States invaded the Caribbean republic of Haiti in order to return which democratically elected president to power?”

(A few years later, one of the officials involved grumbled to me that it was the stupidest damn thing he’d ever been involved with, and shortly after our conversation resigned from the State Department. I hear he’s writing bad thrillers now.)

  1. I think I read somewhere that the first Baker and Martin knew of the four-part version of The Hand of Fear was when the scene breakdown of the four-part version, as written by Robert Holmes, arrived in their letterboxes. I’ve been told, plausibly, that the first broadcast Baker-Martin story where they were responsible for most of what was transmitted was Underworld.

I think that Hinchcliffe has claimed that UNIT might have returned in some form in the 1977/78 season, had he still been in charge.

I need to brush up on my lore too, as I’d not heard of the RTD v Moffat feud.
